An Overview

Treatment of alcohol use disorder at Compassion Recovery Centers

In 2023, 28.9 million Americans aged 12 and older (10.2%) had AUD in the past year, including 16.8 million men and 12.0 million women.

Among youth aged 12 to 17, 757,000 (2.9%) had AUD in the past year.

Despite the high prevalence, treatment remains limited. A systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated efficacy and comparative efficacy of 9 therapies for AUD that are either approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or more commonly used in the United States for AUD.

What is Alcoholism?

Alcoholism, or Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), is a chronic condition characterized by an inability to control alcohol consumption despite negative consequences. It often involves a physical and psychological dependence on alcohol, leading to compulsive drinking, withdrawal symptoms, and an increased tolerance over time. Alcoholism can affect all aspects of a person’s life, including relationships, work, and health, and can significantly reduce quality of life.

The path to addiction often starts with social drinking or casual use, but over time, it can escalate into a physical and psychological dependency. If left untreated, alcoholism can result in serious health complications such as liver disease, heart problems, mental health issues, and even death.

At Compassion Recovery Centers, we offer comprehensive, compassionate, and personalized treatment programs to help individuals recover from alcoholism, regain control of their lives, and rebuild their well-being.

Comprehensive Care

Our approach to treating alcoholism

At Compassion Recovery Centers, we understand that overcoming alcoholism is not just about stopping drinking — it’s about healing the body, mind, and spirit. Our treatment programs are designed to provide individuals with the tools, resources, and support they need to achieve long-lasting sobriety and improve their quality of life.

The first step in alcohol addiction treatment is often detoxification, which involves clearing alcohol from the body under medical supervision. Alcohol withdrawal can be physically and emotionally challenging, with symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe conditions like seizures or delirium tremens (DTs).

At Compassion Recovery Centers, our medical professionals provide a safe and comfortable detox process that is closely monitored to ensure that clients are supported throughout the withdrawal process. We offer medically-assisted detox to help alleviate withdrawal symptoms, reduce the risk of complications, and prepare clients for the next stages of recovery.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective forms of therapy for treating alcoholism. CBT helps individuals identify the negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to their alcohol use and replace them with healthier, more constructive habits.

Through CBT, clients will:

  • Identify triggers that lead to drinking and develop strategies to cope with cravings.
  • Challenge and reframe distorted thinking about alcohol, such as justifying drinking or believing that alcohol is the only way to cope with stress.
  • Learn healthy ways to deal with emotions, anxiety, or stress without resorting to alcohol.

CBT has been shown to significantly reduce relapse rates and promote long-term sobriety, making it a vital part of our treatment program.

For some individuals, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is an important part of alcohol addiction recovery. MAT combines therapy with the use of FDA-approved medications to reduce cravings, improve treatment outcomes, and support long-term sobriety.

Common medications used in alcohol treatment include:

  • Disulfiram (Antabuse): This medication causes an unpleasant reaction (nausea, vomiting, etc.) when alcohol is consumed, discouraging individuals from drinking.
  • Acamprosate (Campral): Helps restore the chemical balance in the brain, reducing cravings and promoting sobriety.
  • Naltrexone: Blocks the pleasurable effects of alcohol, reducing the desire to drink and making it easier to stay sober.

Our team works closely with each individual to assess their needs and determine if medication-assisted treatment is right for them.

Group therapy provides a powerful setting for individuals recovering from alcoholism to share their struggles, experiences, and successes. At Compassion Recovery Centers, group therapy is a cornerstone of our treatment approach. It offers a safe, supportive environment where clients can connect with others who understand their journey and learn from shared experiences.

Benefits of group therapy include:

  • Building a supportive network of individuals in recovery.
  • Learning coping strategies and new perspectives from others.
  • Developing a sense of accountability and shared goals.

In addition to group therapy, individual counseling is an essential component of treatment. One-on-one counseling allows individuals to explore the underlying causes of their alcohol use, such as past trauma, stress, or mental health conditions, and work on healing those areas for long-term recovery.

Alcoholism doesn’t just affect the individual; it also impacts family members and loved ones. At Compassion Recovery Centers, we offer family therapy to help individuals and their families rebuild relationships, heal past wounds, and foster healthy communication.

Family therapy helps:

  • Educate family members about alcoholism and the recovery process.
  • Improve communication and resolve conflicts.
  • Strengthen the family support system, which is crucial for the individual’s long-term sobriety.

At Compassion Recovery Centers, we believe in treating the whole person, not just the addiction. We integrate holistic therapies into our treatment programs to address the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of recovery. These therapies help individuals manage stress, enhance their overall well-being, and promote long-term healing.

Holistic therapies may include:

  • Yoga and Meditation: Practices that help individuals manage stress, improve mental clarity, and promote relaxation.
  • Art Therapy: A creative outlet to process emotions and experiences related to alcohol use and recovery.
  • Nutrition and Exercise Counseling: Teaching clients how to nourish their bodies, promote physical health, and maintain energy during recovery.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR): Helps individuals develop skills to stay grounded and calm in challenging situations, reducing the urge to turn to alcohol.
