Living with both mental health and substance use disorders can feel overwhelming and difficult to manage alone. At Compassion Recovery Centers, we provide integrated, evidence-based dual diagnosis treatment across California to help address both conditions together and support lasting recovery.
A dual diagnosis (also known as a co-occurring disorder) is the clinical term for when an individual suffers from both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder simultaneously.
Common examples include struggling with alcohol dependency while managing clinical depression or using stimulants to cope with undiagnosed PTSD. At Compassion Recovery Centers, we move beyond “traditional” rehab by treating these two conditions as interconnected rather than separate issues.
The Reality of Co-Occurring Disorders
This is a critical step in identifying if integrated care is right for you or a loved one.
Identifying a co-occurring disorder is the first step toward a recovery that actually lasts. If a standard drug rehab hasn’t worked in the past, it’s often because the mental health side of the equation was left untreated.
Treating addiction without addressing mental health is like treating a physical wound while ignoring the infection underneath. If the underlying psychological pain isn’t healed, the urge to use substances will inevitably return.
At Compassion Recovery, we use an Integrated Care Model. We don’t make you wait until you are “sober enough” to start therapy. We begin treating both your mental health and your substance use disorder simultaneously on day one.
We provide a specialized, multidisciplinary approach to a wide range of complex co-occurring disorders. Our team is trained to handle the unique challenges that arise when a mental health condition and a substance use disorder overlap.
We understand that every recovery journey is different. That’s why we offer two primary pathways to healing.
For those with busy lives, family commitments, or who live anywhere in California, our Virtual IOP program offers high-level clinical care through a secure, private telehealth platform.
For those who prefer a more structured, face-to-face setting, we offer in-person care at our two California locations: Laguna Hills (Orange County) and San Bernardino.
Financial stress should never be a barrier to mental health stability. Compassion Recovery Centers accepts 70+ insurance plans, focusing on major PPO providers.
Our clinical leadership is dedicated to seeing you as a person rather than a diagnosis. We begin every journey with a comprehensive and free assessment to build a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique history and specific recovery needs.
We utilize gold standard evidence based therapies like CBT, DBT, and trauma informed care to provide you with the practical tools required for lasting change. To remove financial barriers, we partner with major insurance providers such as BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, and TRICARE, ensuring that the majority of our clients receive high quality care with zero out of pocket costs.

Caring and understanding staffPosted on Daniel MTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Best IOP center in Orange County for a reason. Compassion made recovery possible for me—without stepping into a facility. Their virtual care was personal, flexible, and truly supportive. They saw me as a whole person, not just a patient. Can’t thank them enough.Posted on Maza HoldingsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Have a bit more to say about this IOP but in summary really grateful for Josh, Dr JP and their team of doctors and group facilitators for helping me through a difficult situation. I needed to work around my schdule with family and kids and their program was perfect for me. Maybe it's not ideal for everyone but for me it was exactly what I needed. The whole process from intake, insurance verification, admission, scheduling, I was kept up to date on everything. I met with the Doctor and he was very knowledgeable, spent an hour with me which was what I needed, someone and a program to show that they care. Would recommend this IOP to anyone who struggles with mental health and needs some support and doesn't want to drastically change their life commitments at the time. Thank you Josh and thank you Compassion IOP.Posted on Tara EdwardsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
