United Healthcare Mental Health and Substance Abuse Rehab

United Healthcare Group is the largest health insurance provider in the United States, with an estimated 34+ million people served in the United States alone. The company also offers coverage through both individual plans and company policies, meaning you may have United Healthcare through your own plan or via work.

In addition, with 6,700+ hospitals and care facilities + 6.3 million physicians and care professionals in network, United Healthcare offers significant in-network coverage. If you’re attending Compassion Recovery, we are in network for United Healthcare. However, the coverage you receive, and your out-of-pocket costs will vary depending on the type of plan and whether you have a personal plan or one through your employer. What Does UHC Insurance Cover?

UHC Insurance offers full coverage for mental healthcare and substance abuse rehab care. Like every other insurance provider in the United States, it’s required to offer this coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

However, with one of the largest provider networks in the country, UHC makes it very easy to attend any rehab center you want. For example, Compassion Recovery Centers is fully in network, meaning you can get maximum coverage for our services under your plan.

Mental Health Coverage

United Healthcare offers full coverage for mental healthcare. In most cases, you can sign into your health plan or call the number on your member ID card to get a full overview. However, this should include:

outpatient treatment

Psychotherapy including behavioral therapy

United Healthcare offers support for both inpatient and outpatient programs. If you attend an inpatient mental health treatment program at Compassion Recovery, you’ll have a $50 copay with some plans but you will have to get prior authorization from the plan, the “standard” personal plans all require a 50% copay for inpatient stays.

Substance Abuse

United Healthcare Services offers coverage for substance abuse treatment just like it would for mental health treatment. This means that you can get coverage for every  service offered by Compassion Recovery. This includes:

This means you can get:

01.

Detox, which you can do inpatient or outpatient, including by UHC’s in-network clinics

02.

Inpatient treatment – You typically get a 25-50% deductible for in-network treatment and no coverage for out of network treatment

03.

Outpatient treatment – You can expect a $30-$50 copay per visit for in network providers and no coverage for out of network providers.

04.

Prescriptions – You’ll have your full prescription for substance abuse recovery covered under the same terms as your other medication

05.

Behavioral Health – You’ll get the same terms as for inpatient/outpatient treatment

06.

Aftercare – You can attend ongoing therapy and aftercare with coverage under the same terms as your initial treatment.

UHC also offers multiple resources for individuals with substance use disorders. This means you can check your healthcare app or log in via the web portal to opt into free sessions for virtual or telehealth treatment, ongoing support and resources, and free information on treatment, treatment coverage, and long-term recovery.

Dual Diagnosis

United Healthcare offers full coverage for dual diagnosis treatment. This includes programs that integrate both into one plan, in which case you only pay deductibles and copays once. On the other hand, if you go to a dual track program you may pay deductibles and copays twice, so it’s in your best interest to pick a program that offers both together.

For example, if you go to an inpatient program at Compassion Recovery, you’ll pay the same 50% copay for inpatient care with a Bronze plan. On the other hand, if you attend a dual diagnosis program consisting of a detox program, followed by substance abuse treatment, followed by mental health treatment, your deductibles will re-apply each time.

What Are Your Costs with UHC?

In most cases, you can expect one of three scenarios with UHC.

Your provider is out of network and you cannot get coverage for mental health or rehab care

Your provider is in-network and you get a 30-50% copay for inpatient services

Your provider is in-network and you get a $50 per visit deductible for outpatient services

These will always be capped by your out-of-pocket costs. So, for example, if you go to outpatient care, your costs break down to $1,500 per month plus any other exclusions that your specific plan works in. On the other hand, if you go to inpatient care, you pay 25-50% copay depending on your plan.

Bronze – 50% copay for inpatient admission / $50 per office visit for outpatient services

Gold – 25% Copay for inpatient admission / $30 per office visit for outpatient services

Platinum – $500 copay for inpatient admission / $40 copay per outpatient admission

You’ll also have to factor in your deductible, which is typically $7,500-$1,500 depending on your plan. If you have a platinum plan the deductible does not apply to mental healthcare or substance use treatment. However, it does mean that you’ll pay the deductible + copay for most other plans.

In addition, your actual costs can vary a lot depending on your tier, whether you have a personal plan or a plan through your employer, etc. You’ll also always want to ensure that you have a referral to Compassion Recovery to ensure that your insurance offers coverage. United Healthcare also requires pre-approval.

Compassion is In Network

Compassion Recovery Centers is in-network for all major insurance providers including United Healthcare. We also accept Medicare and Medical, ensuring that you can get coverage with any United Healthcare plan that you have. That’s also important because most United Healthcare plans do not accept out of network providers. This means that if you don’t opt for an in-network provider, you’ll pay the full cost of mental health treatment or rehab out of pocket.

Ensuring that you’re working with a rehab center your insurance provider covers is critical to keeping the costs of your treatment within budget. If you’d like help, contact us for more information and a free consultation.
